ROLL GEOMETRY

How many metres are on the roll?

For film, paper and similar rolls, convert diameter to length or known length to outer diameter.

WHAT WILL THIS CALCULATE?

I know diameter and thickness → how many metres are on the roll?

The method behind the calculation

Length (mm) = π × (outer diameter² − core outer diameter²) / (4 × thickness). 1 micron = 0.001 mm.

Assumptions and limits

Air gaps, compression, stretching and thickness variation affect actual length. This is not a measured delivery quantity. Entering basis weight gives net material mass, excluding the core and packaging. Visual layers are schematic.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Follow the example calculation.

An outer diameter of 500 mm, core outer diameter of 76 mm and thickness of 150 microns give an estimated length of 1,278.75 metres. At a width of 1,000 mm, area is also 1,278.75 m². At 120 g/m², net material mass is about 153.45 kg, excluding the core.

Frequently asked questions

Does roll width change the calculated length?

In this geometric model, length depends on outer diameter, core diameter and thickness. Width changes area and mass calculated from basis weight, not length.

Should I enter shaft diameter or the core’s outer diameter?

Enter the outside diameter of the core where the material starts winding. Using the shaft or core bore would count space that does not contain wound material.

Why might the actual length differ?

Air between layers, winding tension, stretching, thickness variation and liners affect the result. Use this as a geometric estimate, not a guaranteed delivered quantity.
